Tolmachevo Airport is 62!
On 12 July, 2019 NOVOSIBIRSK International Airport (Tolmachevo) celebrates its 62nd birthday. The date of the airport operation commencement is 12 July, 1957, the day when the aviation enterprise serviced the first passenger flight from Novosibirsk to Moscow, operated on the Tu-104.

The route network of the airport is constantly expanding, cooperation with partner airline companies is strengthening. So, following the results of 2018, the passenger traffic of the airport for the first time approached the mark of 6 million, the airport served 5,909,078 passengers.
In 2019, direct regular air communication from Novosibirsk to Guangzhou, Bukhara, Novokuznetsk, Nizhny Novgorod, Voronezh was opened. S7 Airlines, a partner of Tolmachevo airport, added a new flight and increased the frequency of flights to Ulan-Ude, Chita, Sochi, St. Petersburg, Vladivostok, Krasnoyarsk, Yekaterinburg, Omsk and many other destinations. The total number of destinations in the airport's route network exceeds 95. At the end of 2018, Ural Airlines airline company started operating flights to Hefei in China.
The implementation of a joint project with S7 Airlines to create a hub in Novosibirsk shows significant results, thus indicating that the airport was formed as a large transfer hub. Following the results of 2018, the number of passengers, using Tolmachevo airport as a transfer hub, amounted to 1,357 million people (+35% versus 2017). Their share in the total passenger traffic increased to 23%, ensuring Tolmachevo airport second place in Russia after Moscow Air Transportation Cluster airports. Following the results of six months of 2019, the number of transfer passengers increased by 41% compared to the same period last year. Their share in total passenger traffic was already 26%.
Currently, Tolmachevo provides at least 3 arrival and departure connecting waves during the day and the number of transfer connection combinations across the route network of S7 Airlines reaches 2,000.
Currently, the airport serves regular flights of Russian and foreign cargo airline companies Cargolux, Cargolux Italia, Lufthansa Cargo, Volga-Dnepr, Aviastar-TU, Sky Gates, etc. The frequency of cargo flights with technical and commercial landings reaches 50 times per week. Since the beginning of the year, Sky Gates airline company has increased the frequency of flights from 1 to 8 times a week from China and Europe to Novosibirsk with both technical and commercial landings.
The growing capabilities of Tolmachevo as one of the largest cargo and mail hubs in the country allow to receive 1-2 flights of Russian Post per day, processing 50 tons of mail per day (including mail transported by passenger flights). Currently, Russian Post is implementing the project of a logistics postal centre construction at Tolmachevo airport, with an area of 48 thousand square meters. It'll be a key point for processing and distribution of international mail of Russia. The handling capacity of LPC will be 1 million shipments per day, commissioning is scheduled for May 2020.
Active work is being carried out to obtain commercial rights for the purpose of goods transportation from Novosibirsk to Europe and from Europe to Novosibirsk. There continues successful cooperation with large Russian and foreign, in particular Chinese, logistics companies, which in future will allow for the increase in flights frequency on wide-body aircraft with both technical and commercial landings. Cooperation with the basic airline company S7 Airlines on cargo transportation by passenger aircraft is expanding.
Construction of a new in-flight catering factory was launched in a solemn atmosphere at Tolmachevo airport in August 2018. The new in-flight catering shop with the area of more than 5,000 square meters, will be put in commission in August this year and will become the largest enterprise beyond the Urals, which provides in-flight catering services.
Tolmachevo Airport is constantly working to improve the quality of passenger and airline services. In 2018, the business lounge of Tolmachevo airport was reequipped and the list of its services was expanded. The park of special vehicles is updated.
The architectural motif of the new air terminal complex sides was selected in 2019 as part of works on reconstruction design for air terminal complex of Tolmachevo airport. It is planned to implement the Tolmachevo airport air terminal complex reconstruction project by 2025 in two stages with the completion of the first, main stage in 2022. By 2022, the airport expects to increase passenger traffic to 10 million people a year. The approximate total area of air terminal complex after the implementation of the two stages should be more than 100 thousand square meters.
In addition, the Federal targeted investment program of Russia (FTIP), published on the website of the Ministry of economic development of Russia, confirmed budget allocations for the implementation of the Tolmachevo airport complex reconstruction project. As part of the project, it is planned to reconstruct the airfield, and namely the complex of the paved runway-2. The deadline for the works completion is 2023.
On 31 May, Tolmachevo airport was named after the first three times Hero of the Soviet Union, Marshal of Aviation Alexander Ivanovich Pokryshkin, by the Decree of the President of the Russian Federation.
For this year, the Museum of Aviation History of Tolmachevo Airport was enriched with three exhibits — two aircraft of ALROSA – Tu-134B, Tu-154M (“Izhma”) and the aerodrome firefighting vehicle AA-70 (790091), model 241.
