Tolmachevo Airport Was Assigned With the Name of Alexander Pokryshkin

On 31 May, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a decree assigning the names of great countrymen to 44 Russian airports. According to this document, NOVOSIBIRSK International Airport (Tolmachevo) is officially assigned with the name of the three times of Hero of the Soviet Union, Air Marshal, Alexander Pokryshkin.

As noted by the General Director of JSC "Tolmachevo Airport" Evgeniy Yankilevich, shareholder, management and staff treat the name and memory of Alexander Pokryshkin with deep respect. "Construction of a new terminal complex of Tolmachevo airport will start soon. Its architectural concept will reflect not only the development of Novosibirsk as the largest scientific centre, but also the glorious past of the region, he underlined. In particular, one of the peculiarities of the new terminal complex will be a historical component, dedicated to our famous countryman, the legendary World War II pilot Alexander Pokryshkin. Besides, an action plan for the decree implementation is currently being prepared".

In 2019 a number of airports are planning to establish and arrange on their territory special exposition spaces in honour of the winners of the contest of the name assignment as well as to hold celebrations dedicated to these events.

In December 2018, the first stage of the social initiative to assign the names of the great countrymen to the largest airports of Russia in terms of passenger traffic, "The great names" contest was completed. More than 6.2 million people took part in the contest. Russian Society of Literature, Russian Geographical Society, Russian Historical Society, Russian Military History Society were the organizers of the project. The Public Chamber of RF became the operator of the contest.

The national contest was held from 11 October to 23 December 2018. The main stages included drafting proposals from the regions based on the results of public discussions in the public chambers of RF, formation of expanded regional lists, opinion polls held by Public Opinion Study Agency and formation of short lists as well as all-Russian final vote.

The list of the winners comprised representatives of various epochs and occupations, including artists and writers, scientists and engineers, pilots and cosmonauts, government and public figures, pioneers and researchers, military leaders and war heroes. The practice of assigning the names of outstanding persons to certain geographic locations, including airports, sea ports and railway stations, was approved by the decree of the President of Russia Vladimir Putin, dated 28 November, 2018. The Government of RF approved the procedure for assigning the names of outstanding persons to certain geographic locations by the resolution #245 dated 7 March, 2019. On 31 May, 2019 the President of Russia signed a decree on assigning the names of great countrymen to airports.

NOVOSIBIRSK A.I. Pokryshkin International Airport (Tolmachevo) is the largest transit air hub beyond the Urals on the most important destinations between Europe and Asia. Following the results of 2018 the airport serviced 5.909 million passengers. The airport's route network includes more than 95 flight destinations. As of today, the airport offers passengers more than 2000 practical combinations of pairs of connecting routes.
